The Grand Canyon
The Canyon took 3 to 6 million years to build, according to scientists. The oldest rocks are four hundred million years ago. Though that old, it’s one of the last areas in US explored.
The Spaniards were the first to view the canyon in 1540. Francisco Coronado was searching for gold and some Indians told him about the great river to the north. After 20 days of walking they were at the edge of the Grand Canyon.
It wasn’t until 1819 that the Canyon attracted attention, when Major John Wesley Powell started to explore Colorado River. He published accounts of his travels and hence encouraged scientists to pay a closer attention to the Canyon. Since 1919 the Grand Canyon has been made a United States national park.
Due to its elevation the Canyon has many climates. The weather can change without any warning, with heaving rainfalls during summer and snow during winter.
A day hiking in the Canyon doesn’t require a permit. There are nature trails and paths available between the Yavapai Museum and Hermit’s Rest (about 9 miles). The South Rim Nature Trails extend between Maricopa Point and the Yavapai Museum (about 3.75 miles). If you want to spend the night in the Canyon you will be required a permit and you’ll have to camp at a designated campsite.
A lot of travel agencies offer tours in the Canyon and you can even get married there (for a “reasonable” fee of more then $2000 – I must I found the most expansive travel agency). You can take a helicopter tour or an airplane tour.
