Setback for anti-UIGEA Bill
That Reps. Barney Frank and Ron Paul are opposed to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) comes as no surprise for those with interests in the online gambling industry. They are backed not only by the online gambling industry, but also by the Poker Players Alliance (PPA). The PPA is an alliance of both professional and amateur poker players who wants to see the UIGEA act amended.
On Wednesday, June 26, the House Financial Services Committee voted on a Frank-Paul bill that would effectively stop the implementation of the UIGEA. The bill would also require clarification from federal regulators on what actually constitutes “illegal internet gambling”. The vote resulted in 32 ayes and 32 nays, meaning that the amendment failed to pass.
