Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (RRCNCA) is an area of world wide geologic interest, located only a few miles west from Las Vegas (less then an hour drive). As a visitor, you can admire colorful rock formations on hiking or driving trails. RRCNCA comprises 197,000 acres in the Mojave Desert.
The most significant geological feature in RRCNCA is the Keystone Thrust Fault, which extends from the Cottonwoood Fault, 13 miles NE to La Madre Mountains.
You can take the Scenic Drive, which offers numerous stops for sightseeing and photography. There are hiking trails available and they are opened from 6 a.m until dusk. If you lack time, stop at one of the Calico Vista points to take great photos. You can stop for a picnic at Red Spring and Willow Spring. Hike to Lost Creek to watch the great scenery offered by a spring and a waterfall (however, seasonally cascading). Pine Creek Canyon is one of the most popular hiking trails which lead to the ruins of a historic homestead, right near a running creek.
There is a Visitor Center where you can find information about recreation opportunities, while horses, vegetations, geology, wildlife and many more. You can visit the Gift Store and buy souvenirs for friends. The Gift Store features objects created by local artisans, handcrafted jewelry made by Native Americans, books, maps and many more.
The Exhibit Area comprises cultural natural resources from the Conservation Area. Also, there is a lizard lounge that house rescued lizards.
The Bicycle Pavilion is located near the Visitor Center and offers a rest location with water and restroom for bicycle lovers.
It’s very important to carry water with you because you can get dehydrated. Have at least a gallon a day available for a person for one day of hiking. Take some sunglasses to protect you from the summer’s sun. Everything in the Canyon is protected by law so don’t disturb, remove or damage anything.
You will need permits to do the following within the Canyon: collecting, filming, rock climbing, special events, and weddings, among others.
