How to get to Las Vegas
Las Vegas is located in the Mojave Desert, in Nevada, US, being the most popular city in the state. According to the Bureau of the Census the city has a total area of 113.4 square miles. Las Vegas is located in an arid basin and is surrounded by mountains. Being in the desert, its landscape is rocky and dusty. Its climate is typical for the Mojave Desert, with hot summers, mild winters and very little rainfall. As a consequence the authorities are making efforts to conserve water.
The hottest temperature ever recorded was 117o F on July 24th, 1942 where now Nellis Air Force Base is located, while the coldest temperature ever recorded was 8 o F on January 25th, 1937 in the same place. Though snow is visible from December to May on the mountains surrounding the city, it seldom snows in the city itself.
McCarran International Airport is the airport that provides commercial and private flights. Most of the international flights also come to McCarran. There are other airports available also, including North Las Vegas Airport. There are fourteen airlines operating in Las Vegas. Some of them are: Air Canada, America West Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, United Airlines and many more.
Major roadways in and out of Las Vegas include:
• I-15 (N to Salt Lake City, Utah, S to San Diego and Los Angeles, California);
• US 93 (N to Ely and Jackpot, Nevada, S to Kingman, Arizona);
• US 95 (N to Reno and S to Searchlight, Nevada).
Today there isn’t any rail service available for passengers to go to Las Vegas but there is Amtrak’s Thruway Motorcoach bus service. However, the plans to restore passenger rail services to the city were not put into practice yet (though there was once such a service).
Within the city there is Las Vegas Monorail that runs from MGM Grand Hotel (South end of the Strip) to Sahara Hotel (North end of the Strip). Some intercity bus services include traditional service carriers, including Greyhound, as well as many charted services.
